This week I baked a Kendrick Lamar challah! I know you’ve seen this meme around the last couple of weeks and now it’s in challah-form. Listen, I made this challah a few days ago because I’m traveling today, but I don’t want y’all to think I’m not crushed by the news that came out yesterday. I struggled with whether or not to post it, but I decided that I am here to uplift and spread some Jewish joy as my part of “tikkun olam” or “repairing the world.” As we grieve, we need to be strong and not let them break us. This week I baked a Whomping Willow challah! Yesterday was the wonderful holiday of Tu Bishvat, the holiday for the trees. Of course, I had to make a tree-themed challah (with Mr. Weasley’s flying Ford crashed in it). This week I baked a Lunar New Year Snake challah! A happy and prosperous new year to all my friends and family celebrating the Lunar New Year and Year of the Snake. I love that Jews aren’t the only ones who follow a lunar year, they’re just shifted a bit from each other. The other amazing thing is how we as humans all celebrate some sort of holiday around our planet revolving once around our sun. Makes you realize we’re all so similar, even though many seem to focus on our differences lately. For this challah, I made red dough and used edible gold accents, but the red coloring came out a bit more pink than I would have liked. What to do you think?? Gong hay fat choy and Shabbat shalom!!

This week I baked a Keep the Han in Hanukkah challah! Tonight is the third night of Chanukah and we can all rejoice that Han Solo, Harrison Ford, is actually half-Jewish. Here in “Beit Dorky,” we watched the season finale of Shrinking last night and if Harrison doesn’t win an Emmy for his unbelievable acting in this series, there’s seriously something wrong. This week I baked a Banana Duct-Taped to a Wall challah! Have you seen this piece of “art” that is an actual banana duct-taped to a wall? The piece isn’t new, it’s called “Comedian” and was made by Maurizio Cattelan in 2019. It was purchased last week for over $6 MILLION and the buyer ate the banana! Oh my! So this is my challah art piece inspired by that unusual art piece. Should I auction it off and donate a portion of the proceeds to charity?? I’m thinking I should. Shabbat shalom!

This week I baked a Bob Belcher challah! Gotta keep moving on completing my set of Bob’s Burgers character challahs (see: Linda, Gene, and Louise). I even made my own Burger of the Day (I do OK with the photoshop). They did a few challah-themed burgers on the show including a “Home for the Challah-Days Burger” but I like mine better. Bob is seriously one awesome guy and voiced by the amazing H. Jon Benjamin (@jazzdaredevil). You know who’s not so awesome, the guy who played Jimmy Pesto Sr (I’m not sayin’, I’m just sayin’). This week I baked a Venom challah! This time of year, I usually make a scary-ish challah (hey, it’s Challahween next week). I think the Marvel villain Venom is particularly terrifying (especially to eat those spikey challah teeth! UGH) and there’s a new movie that opened yesterday “Venom: The Last Dance.” On another note: Today was the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah, the last of high holidays this season. It’s typically a very joyous holiday, but this year, it’s a particularly difficult anniversary for us. Again we charge on and do our best to spread joy and love, against all odds. This week I baked a Pooh Gets Stuck challah! Winnie the Pooh is really just the best. But why did I make this challah this week? OK, follow me here...this week is the holiday Sukkot. Rabbi Yael (@midrashmanicures) so humorously noted that on some poorly designed products, the Hebrew word for Sukkot was spelled backwards (Hebrew reads right to left, sillies). When you spell it backwards, it spells...TUCHUS...the Yiddish word for BUTT. So I racked my brain trying to think of a butt-related challah to make, one that was fairly innocuous. I was going to make Pooh’s butt sticking out of Rabbit’s House door, but it didn’t look like much. This is a much better scene. Oh bother! ALSO, it’s a particularly celebratory Sukkot right now, so chag sameach to all who celebrate and Shabbat shalom!
