Challah Artistry: A Journey of Tradition & Creativity

Imagine a gathering at your synagogue or organization where the threads of tradition and creativity intertwine. Freddie Feldman, also known as The Dorky Jew, is a Skokie, IL based storyteller and artist of challah, the bread that has graced our tables and rituals for generations.

Freddie will take your community on a journey through the art of challah, from a single strand to a beautifully braided masterpiece. We’ll explore his personal narrative, uncover the layers of challah’s history, enjoy a live braiding demonstration, and then conclude with an engaging Q&A to tie it all together.

Having spoken at numerous events nationwide and even a TED talk in Vienna, and performed for 10 years in the Jewish a cappella group Listen Up!, Freddie brings a wealth of experience to the table—or the challah board, in this case.

This week I baked a Lois Griffin challah! This Sunday is Mother’s Day and I like to honor all the mothers each year with a challah in the shape of an iconic mother (see: Linda Belcher, Marge Simpson, Wilma Flintstone). This week I baked an R2-D2 challah! Tomorrow is Star Wars Day (May the 4th) and it’s also the first challah baked after Passover. We typically bake this challah in the shape of a shlissel (key) and/or bake an actual key into it. I believe that R2-D2 is the KEY to connecting all the Star Wars films together. So let’s bring it all together in this challah. It appears I picked up a spot of the Covid and I’m feeling pretty crappy, but I just couldn’t skip making a challah this week. So my apologies if it’s not up to my best and it is not the challah you are looking for. May the Force be with you all and Shabbat shalom!

This week I baked a Conan O’Brien matzah! It’s my AFICONAN, get it?!? There is a special matzah we hide during the Passover Seder and the kids in the house have to find it, it’s called the Afikomen. I’m picturing Conan O’Brien hiding in my house while my two teens search for him, as he stands in the corner being all tall with a lampshade on his head. Ahhh to dream. Conan’s appearance on Hot Ones and his new show Conan O’Brien Must Go on Max has put him back in our homes once again and I, for one, am excited for it. Anyways, I take a break from challahs and make matzah from scratch each year and it’s quite tricky to get it all made in under 18 minutes, but it’s a fun challenge. This one came out really great, starting to get the knack for it. Chag sameach and Shabbat shalom! L’shanah haba’ah b’Yerushalayim.

This week I baked a Taylor Swift - The Tortured Poets Department challah! The giant release of this double album happened overnight and I just had to call an audible, drop the challah I was planning to make, and swap it out for Taylor. I’ve been playing it all morning and while I made this challah. I also agree that Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist. Sadly, my trusty KitchenAid mixer broke right as I was finishing my dough this morning (planetary gear not engaging), so there was a bit of a panic UGH. At least I’ve got a couple weeks to fix this thing before I have to make challah again, since Passover starts Monday night. My matzah I’ll make next week is handmade, obvs. L’shana haba’ah b’Yerushalayim. Chag kasher v’same’ach and Shabbat shalom!!

This week I baked a Cherry Blossom challah! Spring is really here for sure now and the cherry blossoms and other flowering trees have all been blooming beautifully (even here in Chicago). I also love bonsai trees, so I thought I’d make my challah in the shape a of potted miniature cherry blossom. She’s so cute. This one took longer to make than most and I think has the best before/after pic comparison. Happy spring and a peaceful Shabbat shalom!!

This week I baked a Bluey challah! If you’ve got little kids, Bluey is kind of a big deal. I think she’s a delight, as is her sister Bingo, and the whole show. My kids are in HS now, so gone are the days of watching things like Yo Gabba Gabba and Backyardigans with them (but maybe I need to make some challahs from those shows eh?) and we missed out on watching Bluey. This week I baked a RUSH Fly By Night challah! I recently finished reading Geddy Lee’s autobiography “My Effin Life” and I’ve gotta say it’s simply wonderful. I’m a lifelong Rush fan and I’m Jewish, so the entire book resonated strongly with me. I particularly appreciated the first couple of chapters where Geddy recounts his parents’ experience in the Holocaust and adjusting to life in Canada after surviving. Fly By Night was actually recorded just a few months after I was born, so I feel a bit connected to it…like they recorded it to celebrate my birth!! Woo! Fly by night and Shabbat shalom!!

This week I baked a Jafar challah! Follow me on this…tomorrow night starts the Jewish holiday of Purim, based on the story from the book of Esther. The evil villain in the story is Haman, who is the right-hand man of Persian king Ahasuerus. Basically he plans to kill all of the Jews, it backfires, we survived. Part of our celebration is that we eat hamantaschen cookies which are shaped like Haman’s ears (yeah, I dunno). He feels very similar to Jafar from Aladdin and since we don’t know what Haman looked like and we do know what Jafar looks like…here we are. Today we have another real threat to our people and once again, like on Purim, we know we will be victorious. Chag sameach and Shabbat shalom!!

This week I baked an Eiffel Tower challah! So…tomorrow is my 50th birthday and to celebrate, I took my lady, The Less-Dorky Jewess, to Paris! We went up in La Tour Eiffel yesterday and it was simply amazing. It’s something I’ve obviously seen photos of my entire life and then finally to experience it in person, it’s so much larger than I imagined. Paris is a wonderful city and I’m eating every bread and pastry I can find. BTW we went on a chocolate & pastry tour today from @lacuisineparis and Eline was amazing. Highly recommend! This week I baked The Unknown challah! Did you see all the craziness with the Willy’s Chocolate Experience in Glasgow last week? Seriously, there’s a whole Wikipedia page on it now, go look. Basically, it was a scam event that was unlicensed and purported to be some sort of fantastical chocolate experience...but was a massive flop. They even used an AI-generated script that came up with some crazy character called The Unknown, an evil chocolate maker who lives in the walls (and hides bebind a mirror?) and seeks to steal the magical “Anti-Graffiti Gobstopper” from Willy McDuff’s (Willy Wonka??) chocolate factory. D-A-F-U-Q. Totally insane and amazing. I’ve only made a couple black dough challot before (see: Dark Vader and Black Panther) and I didn’t get it dark enough to really be black today but it’s actually my favorite shade of my favorite color: dark grey. Also, happy International Women’s Day, a great day for “those people” to return the women they’ve taken (you know what I’m talking about) and Shabbat shalom!!

OK, so the whole idea of Leap Day William was made up by the brilliant geniuses in the writing room for 30 Rock, but I think we should go with it for real. This week I baked a Lunar New Year Dragon challah! A happy and prosperous new year to all my friends and family celebrating the Lunar New Year and Year of the Dragon. I love that Jews aren’t the only ones who follow a lunar year, they’re just shifted a bit from each other. The other amazing thing is how we as humans all celebrate some sort of holiday around our planet revolving once around our sun. Makes you realize we’re all so similar, even though many seem to focus on our differences lately. While this isn’t my first dragon challah (check my House Targaryen from Sept ‘22), I really am pleased with how it came out. What to do you think?? Gong hay fat choy and Shabbat shalom!!

I love that Jews aren’t the only ones who follow a lunar year, they’re just shifted a bit from each other. The other amazing thing is how we as humans all celebrate some sort of holiday around our planet revolving once around our sun. Makes you realize we’re all so similar, even though many seem to focus on our differences lately. While this isn’t my first dragon challah (check my House Targaryen from Sept ‘22), I really am pleased with how it came out. What to do you think?? Gong hay fat choy and Shabbat shalom!!

This week I baked a Maggie Simpson challah! Today is Groundhog Day and who better to symbolize the “stuck in a loop” nature of the day (well at least in the movie) than the littlest member of the Simpson family who never grows up (none of the kids age, I know, but it seems to be the worst for Maggie). While we’re on the subject, why do we do continue to look to this prophetic subterranean giant wizard-rat to inconsistently predict the future?? This morning he predicted 6 more weeks of winter…yeah bruh we already knew that. Happy Groundhog Day and Shabbat shalom!

This week I baked a Chicago Rat Hole challah! Of course, you’ve heard about our rat hole here in Chicago, yes? Ok, so let’s just get this out of the way, it was a squirrel not a rat. But rat hole sounds better than squirrel hole, ya? There’s even a Wikipedia page and a contest to name him, with entries like Splatatouille (the winner and my fav), Lil Stucky, and Dibs. Many have made the pilgrimage to see the imprint of a squirrel that sadly fell into wet cement decades ago, leaving coins, odd offerings (Malört!), and supplications in and around the hole. Some have gotten engaged or even married besides the hole. It is time, however, to leave the poor residents of Roscoe Street alone and let them get back to their lives. RIP, lil buddy and Shabbat shalom!

This week I baked a Baby Groot challah! The holiday of Tu BiShvat is next week, it’s the Jewish Arbor Day or the “New Year of the Trees” and it’s a wonderful eco-holiday. It’s not a real celebratory time right now tbh but we press on and do what we can. Baby Groot, an extraterrestrial tree monster expertly voiced by Vin Diesel, is by far the cutest Marvel character ever. My challah Groot was made to scale and is 10.25” tall just like the one in the films. I am Groot! Chag sameach and Shabbat shalom!

This week I baked an AT-AT Walker challah! We’re gettin hit here today in Chicago with a blizzard and I always laugh my butt off when I think of the “Meanwhile, in Chicago…” meme with an AT-AT walking through downtown by the Chicago theater. Chicago is feeling particularly Hoth-like today. I figured it was about time to get back to my dorky roots and make a Star Wars challah since I haven’t done one in a while. This week I baked a Mickey Mouse Steamboat Willie challah! You may have heard that Mickey Mouse (the early version) has entered the public domain as of Jan 1. The OG Mickey is actually a lot more intricate of a design than the newer version and it’s a bit tricky to make in challah, but I’m pretty happy with how he turned out and lovin the black-and-white images of the challah. Also, check out the vintage Israeli Mickey Mouse (Ma’oz) comics from 1947, who knew?? (h/t to @samgrinberg for that find) Now let’s commence with the weird depictions of Mickey in horror movies and other unusual settings. Shabbat shalom!

This week I baked a “The One with the Routine” challah! The New Year is upon us and the best New Years Eve TV episode was surely the episode on Friends where Joey, Monica, and Ross were on “some sort of Dickin’ Rockin’ Dicky Eve.” I hope everyone has a happy and safe new year and for those that are being held to no longer be held by those who are holding them (knowwhatimsayin?).
